Showroom sets sights on national apprenticeship award

An independent creative hub has been named as Yorkshire’s best newcomer employer at the Yorkshire & Humber National Apprenticeship Awards after receiving support from Skills Made Easy.
Over the past eighteen months Skills Made Easy has been working closely with the Showroom Workstation based on Paternoster Row, helping the company to launch an apprenticeship programme with the aim of creating opportunities to help school leavers forge careers in marketing, finance, maintenance and catering.
To date Showroom Workstation has employed four apprentices as well as providing pastoral support helping job seekers to transition into full-time work and improve long term employment prospects after completing their placements.
After winning one of Yorkshire’s top regional apprenticeship awards, Showroom Workstation will now go head-to-head with other regional winners, with the hope of securing a spot in the national finals.
Launched in 1993 the Showroom Workstation has been an integral part of Sheffield’s cultural industries quarter and encompasses a cinema, workspace for the city’s creative industries, bar and conference & banqueting facilities.
Julie Simpson, General Manager of Showroom Workstation said:
“We firmly believe in creating an environment that allows our apprentices to shine. For example, after pitching the idea to our CEO, Jamie, our former Conferencing and Events apprentice, organised, promoted and managed a packed weekend of new-talent and live music in our bar for this year’s Tramlines festival. This level of initiative has since helped her to successfully secure a full-time permanent job elsewhere.
“We are currently facilitating and supporting our other apprentices to gain additional qualifications which will help them to achieve their dream jobs or allow them to attend University. We are proud that we have been recognised for our work so far, and plan to further develop our apprenticeship offer and employ more apprentices in the future”.
Sue Husband, Director of the National Apprenticeship Service, said:
"Sheffield’s Showroom Workstation has been recognised as winner of the Best Newcomer Employer Award in Yorkshire and the Humber and I would like to congratulate them on their achievement. They deserve to be rewarded for their efforts. There has never been a better time to become an apprentice or employ one.”
“The National Apprenticeship Awards enable talented apprentices and committed employers to receive the recognition they richly deserve. They not only help celebrate the achievements of apprentices and businesses, allowing them to gain the credit for investing in their own futures, but they drive up quality and encourage others to get involved. “
